Son of George and Mary Chapman: Husband of May Isabel Chapman of White Moss, Lancashire. Died on the 14th March 1941. Aged 33. Buried at Christ Church, Military Cemetery, Portsdown. Row M Grave 186.

    These sappers were members of 23 Bomb Disposal Company, Royal Engineers based at nearby Fort Widley. They were killed while attempting to render safe an unexploded bomb in Southsea.

    Royal Engineer bomb disposal and diving personnel have been among Project Vernon’s staunchest supporters and are among those represented by the Vernon Monument. More background at:
