Son of Alexander and Joan Hardie: Husband of Jessie Hardie Died on the 22nd November 1944. Aged 25. Commemorated at Groesbeek Memorial.   Wounded. Lance Corporal E Nunn, Driver J Melvin, J  Staniland and Sapper Wallis.   Incident. The 2 i/c visited the casualties on 23 November 1944. They reported that Driver J Melvin had arrived at the site, which was a SS Barracks at S Hertogenbosh, Netherlands, in his lorry loaded with various missiles, collected from the market square, of S Hertogenbosh. He and Sapper Wallis were having tea in a adjacent room to the one containing explosives. Corporal Humphrey had lowered the lorry tow board and was unloading it. Driver Melvin had just ***** his tea when there was an explosion closely followed by a second. It wasn't until 2230 when the working party had failed to return that Lt Conlon went to the site and the accident was discovered. After investigation later there was no evidence to show what caused the explosion. The Chief Royal Engineer Second Army Group decided that the incident should be treated as a Battle Accident.
